A. Compreendendo o sofrimento através das Escrituras.
1. O sofrimento refina e fortalece a fé
· Tiago 1: 2-4 – “Meus irmãos, considerem motivo de grande alegria o fato de passarem por diversas provações, pois vocês sabem que a provação da sua fé produz perseverança.”
· 1 Pedro 1:6-7 – “Nisso vocês se alegram, ainda que agora, por breve tempo, se necessário, sejam contristados por várias provações, para que a prova da sua fé, mais preciosa do que o ouro que perece, mesmo refinado pelo fogo, resulte em louvor, glória e honra, quando Jesus Cristo for revelado.”
· Romanos 5:3-5 – “E não somente isso, mas também nos gloriamos nas tribulações, sabendo que a tribulação produz perseverança; a perseverança, experiência; e a experiência, esperança; e a esperança não nos decepciona.”
· Provérbios 17:3 – “O crisol é para a prata, e o forno para o ouro; mas o Senhor prova os corações.”
2. O sofrimento nos aproxima de Deus
· Salmo 34:18 – “Perto está o Senhor dos que têm o coração quebrantado e salva os de espírito abatido.”
· 2 Coríntios 12:9-10 – “Mas ele me disse: ‘A minha graça te basta, porque o meu poder se aperfeiçoa na fraqueza’. De boa vontade, pois, me gloriarei nas minhas fraquezas, para que sobre mim repouse o poder de Cristo.”
· Salmo 119:71 – “Foi-me bom ter sido afligido, para que aprendesse os teus estatutos.”

3. O sofrimento produz compaixão pelos outros
· 2 Coríntios 1: 3-4 – “Bendito seja o Deus e Pai de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo, Pai das misericórdias e Deus de toda consolação, que nos consola em toda a nossa tribulação, para que também possamos consolar os que estiverem em alguma tribulação.”
· Gálatas 6:2 – “Levai as cargas uns dos outros e, assim, cumprireis a lei de Cristo.”
· Romanos 12:15 – “Alegrai-vos com os que se alegram; chorai com os que choram.”
· Hebreus 13:3 – “Lembrai-vos dos que estão na prisão, como se estivésseis presos com eles, e dos que são maltratados, pois também vós estais no corpo.”
4. O sofrimento glorifica a Deus
· João 9:3 – “Respondeu Jesus: ‘Nem ele nem seus pais pecaram, mas foi para que se manifestem nele as obras de Deus.’”
· 1 Pedro 4:16 – “Contudo, se alguém sofre como cristão, não se envergonhe, mas glorifique a Deus neste nome.”
· 2 Coríntios 4:17 – “Porque a nossa leve e momentânea tribulação produz para nós um peso eterno de glória, acima de toda comparação.”
· Filipenses 1:29 – “Porque a vocês foi concedida a graça de padecer por Cristo e não somente de crer nele.”
5. O sofrimento ensina dependência de Deus
· Jó 1:21 – “O Senhor o deu, e o Senhor o tirou; bendito seja o nome do Senhor.”
· Deuteronômio 8:3 – “Ele te humilhou, e te deixou ter fome, e te sustentou com o maná, que tu não conhecias, nem teus pais o conheceram; para te dar a entender que o homem não viverá só de pão.”
· Salmo 46:1 – “Deus é nosso refúgio e fortaleza, socorro bem presente na angústia.”
· Isaías 41:10 – “Não temas, porque eu sou contigo; não te assombres, porque eu sou teu Deus; eu te fortaleço, e te ajudo.”
6. O sofrimento nos prepara para a vida eterna
· Romanos 8:18 – “Porque para mim tenho por certo que os sofrimentos deste tempo presente não podem ser comparados com a glória a ser revelada em nós.”
· 2 Timóteo 2:12 – “Se perseverarmos, também com ele reinaremos; se o negarmos, também ele nos negará.”
· 1 Pedro 5:10 – “E o Deus de toda a graça, que em Cristo vos chamou à sua eterna glória, depois de terdes sofrido por um pouco, ele mesmo vos aperfeiçoará, confirmará, fortificará e fundamentará.”

7. O sofrimento disciplina e corrige

· Provérbios 3:11-12 – “Meu filho, não despreze a disciplina do Senhor, nem se canse da sua repreensão, pois o Senhor repreende aquele a quem ama, assim como o pai ao filho a quem quer bem.”
· Lamentações 3:31-33 – “Porque o Senhor não rejeitará para sempre; mas, ainda que entristeça, usará de compaixão segundo a grandeza da sua benignidade.”

8. O sofrimento demonstra a soberania de Deus

B. A Esperança da Ressurreição e da Vida Eterna.
1. A Promessa da Ressurreição
· João 11:25-26 – “Disse-lhe Jesus: ‘Eu sou a ressurreição e a vida. Quem crê em mim, ainda que morra, viverá; e todo aquele que vive e crê em mim jamais morrerá.’”
· 1 Coríntios 15:20-22 – “Mas, de fato, Cristo ressuscitou dentre os mortos, sendo ele as primícias dos que dormem. Porque, assim como a morte veio por um homem, também a ressurreição dos mortos veio por um homem.”
· Romanos 8:11 – “Se o Espírito daquele que dos mortos ressuscitou a Jesus habita em vocês, aquele que dos mortos ressuscitou a Cristo Jesus também vivificará os seus corpos mortais, por meio do seu Espírito que em vocês habita.”

2. Vida Eterna pela Fé em Cristo

1. Suffering Refines and Strengthens Faith
· James 1: 2-4 – “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.”
· 1 Peter 1: 6-7 – “In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”
· Romans 5: 3-5 – “Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame.”
· Proverbs 17: 3 – “The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold, and the Lord tests hearts.”
2. Suffering Draws Us Closer to God
