• Isaías 29:13: E disse o Senhor: “Porque este povo se aproxima de mim com a sua boca e me honra com os seus lábios, mas o seu coração está longe de mim, e o seu temor de mim é um mandamento ensinado pelos homens…”

• Jeremias 12:2: Tu os plantaste, e eles criaram raízes; cresceram e deram fruto; tu estás perto da sua boca, mas longe do seu coração.

• Ezequiel 33:30-33: Quanto a ti, filho do homem, o teu povo, que fala de ti junto aos muros e às portas das casas, diz uns aos outros, cada um ao seu irmão: Vinde, e ouvi qual é a palavra que procede do Senhor. E eles vêm a ti como os homens vêm, e se assentam diante de ti como meu povo, e ouvem o que dizes, mas não o põem em prática; porque com palavras lascivas na boca agem; o seu coração está voltado para o lucro. E eis que tu és para eles como alguém que canta canções lascivas com uma bela voz e toca bem um instrumento, pois ouvem o que dizes, mas não o põem em prática. Quando isso acontecer — e acontecerá! — então saberão que um profeta esteve no meio deles.

• Tito 1:16: Afirmam conhecer a Deus, mas o negam pelas suas obras. São detestáveis, desobedientes e indignos de qualquer boa obra.

• 2 Timóteo 3:5: Tendo aparência de piedade, mas negando o seu poder. Evite tais pessoas.

• Tiago 1:26: Se alguém cuida ser religioso e não refreia a sua língua, mas engana o seu coração, a religião desse homem é vã.

• 1 João 2:4: Todo aquele que diz: “Eu o conheço”, mas não guarda os seus mandamentos, é mentiroso, e nele não está a verdade.

• 1 João 3:18: Filhinhos, não amemos de palavra nem de boca, mas de fato e em verdade.

Hipocrisia: Aparência religiosa sem obediência

• Isaías 1:11-15: Que me importa a multidão dos vossos sacrifícios? Diz o Senhor; estou farto dos holocaustos de carneiros e da gordura de animais cevados; não me agrado do sangue de touros, nem de cordeiros, nem de bodes. Quando vindes comparecer perante mim, quem vos requereu que pisásseis os meus átrios? Não mais tragais ofertas vãs; o incenso é para mim uma abominação. Luas novas, sábados e convocações; não posso suportar a iniquidade e a assembleia solene. As vossas luas novas e as vossas festas fixas a minha alma aborrece; tornaram-se um peso para mim; estou cansado de as suportar. Quando estenderdes as vossas mãos, esconderei de vós os meus olhos; ainda que multipliqueis as vossas orações, não as ouvirei; as vossas mãos estão cheias de sangue.

• Amós 5:21-24: Odeio e desprezo as vossas festas, e não tenho prazer nas vossas assembleias solenes. Ainda que me ofereçais os vossos holocaustos e as vossas ofertas de cereais, não me agradarei deles; nem olharei para as ofertas pacíficas dos vossos animais cevados. Afastai de mim o ruído dos vossos cânticos; não ouvirei a melodia das vossas harpas. Mas corra o juízo como as águas, e a retidão como um ribeiro perene.

• Tiago 2:14-17: De que adianta, meus irmãos, se alguém disser que tem fé, se não tiver obras? Pode essa fé salvá-lo? Se um irmão ou uma irmã estiver nu e necessitado do alimento cotidiano, e um de vocês lhe disser: ‘Ide em paz, aquecei-vos e fartai-vos’, sem lhes dar o necessário para o corpo, de que adianta isso? Assim também a fé, se não tiver obras, é morta em si mesma.

• 1 Pedro 1:14-17: Como filhos obedientes, não se amoldem às paixões que antes havia na ignorância. Mas, como é santo aquele que os chamou, sejam santos vocês também em toda a sua conduta, pois está escrito: ‘Sede santos, porque eu sou santo’. E, se vocês invocam como Pai aquele que julga imparcialmente, segundo as obras de cada um, andem com temor durante o tempo da sua peregrinação.

Testemunho Profético Consistente Contra Rituais Sem Coração

• Oseias 6:4-6: Que farei contigo, ó Efraim? Que farei contigo, ó Judá? O teu amor é como a nuvem da manhã, como o orvalho que cedo se dissipa. Por isso, eu os abati pelos profetas; eu os matei pelas palavras da minha boca, e o meu julgamento se espalha como a luz. Pois quero misericórdia e não sacrifícios, o conhecimento de Deus em vez de holocaustos.

• Miquéias 6:6-8: Com que me apresentarei ao Senhor, e me prostrarei diante do Deus Altíssimo? Apresentar-me-ei diante dele com holocaustos, com bezerros de um ano? Agradar-se-á o Senhor de milhares de carneiros, de dezenas de milhares de ribeiros de azeite? Darei o meu primogênito pela minha transgressão, o fruto do meu ventre pelo pecado da minha alma? Ele te declarou, ó homem, o que é bom; e que é o que o Senhor pede de ti, senão que pratiques a justiça, e ames a beneficência, e andes humildemente com o teu Deus?

Condenações específicas de Jesus à hipocrisia e à hipocrisia

• Mateus 15:7-9: Hipócritas! Bem profetizou Isaías a vosso respeito, quando disse: Este povo honra-me com os lábios, mas o seu coração está longe de mim; em vão me adoram, ensinando doutrinas que são preceitos de homens.

• Mateus 6:1: Não pratiquem a justiça diante dos homens, só para serem vistos por eles; do contrário, vocês não terão recompensa junto de seu Pai, que está nos céus.

Se outro vier em seu próprio nome, vocês o receberão. Como vocês podem crer, se recebem glória uns dos outros e não buscam a glória que vem do Deus único?

• Deuteronômio 10:12-13: Agora, pois, ó Israel, que é o que o Senhor teu Deus pede de ti, senão que temas o Senhor teu Deus, que andes em todos os seus caminhos, e o ames, e sirvas ao Senhor teu Deus de todo o teu coração e de toda a tua alma, e guardes os mandamentos e os estatutos do Senhor, que hoje te ordeno para o teu bem?

• Deuteronômio 6:5: Amarás ao Senhor teu Deus de todo o teu coração, de toda a tua alma e de todas as tuas forças.

• Salmo 51:16-17: Pois não te deleitarás em sacrifícios, senão eu os daria; não te agradarás de holocaustos. Os sacrifícios para Deus são um espírito quebrantado; um coração quebrantado e contrito, ó Deus, não desprezarás.

Outward Lip-service Without True Heart Devotion

• Isaiah 29:13: And the Lord said: “Because this people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me, and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men,”

• Jeremiah 12:2: You plant them, and they take root; they grow and produce fruit; you are near in their mouth and far from their heart.

• Ezekiel 33:30-33: As for you, son of man, your people who talk together about you by the walls and at the doors of the houses, say to one another, each to his brother, ‘Come, and hear what the word is that comes from the Lord.’ And they come to you as people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear what you say but they will not do it; for with lustful talk in their mouths they act; their heart is set on their gain. And behold, you are to them like one who sings lustful songs with a beautiful voice and plays well on an instrument, for they hear what you say, but they will not do it. When this comes—and come it will!—then they will know that a prophet has been among them.

• Titus 1:16: They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.

• 2 Timothy 3:5: Having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.

• James 1:26: If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless.

• 1 John 2:4: Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

• 1 John 3:18: Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.

Hypocrisy: Religious Appearance Without Obedience

• Isaiah 1:11-15:  What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices? says the Lord; I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of well-fed beasts; I do not delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs, or of goats. When you come to appear before me, who has required of you this trampling of my courts? Bring no more vain offerings; incense is an abomination to me. New moon and Sabbath and the calling of convocations—I cannot endure iniquity and solemn assembly. Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hates; they have become a burden to me; I am weary of bearing them. When you spread out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; even though you make many prayers, I will not listen; your hands are full of blood.

• Amos 5:21-24: I hate, I despise your feasts, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies. Even though you offer me your burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them; and the peace offerings of your fattened animals, I will not look upon them. Take away from me the noise of your songs; to the melody of your harps I will not listen. But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.

• James 2:14-17: What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace, be warmed and filled,’ without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

Consistent Prophetic Testimony Against Ritual Without Heart

• Hosea 6:4-6: What shall I do with you, O Ephraim? What shall I do with you, O Judah? Your love is like a morning cloud, like the dew that goes early away. Therefore I have hewn them by the prophets; I have slain them by the words of my mouth, and my judgment goes forth as the light. For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

• Micah 6:6-8: With what shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

Jesus’ Specific Condemnations of Lip-service and Hypocrisy

• Matthew 15:7-9: You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said: ‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’

• Mark 7:6-7: And he said to them, ‘Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, “This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.”‘

• Matthew 23:27-28: Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness. So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

• Matthew 6:1: Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

• Matthew 6:5: And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.

• Matthew 7:21: Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

• Luke 6:46: Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?

• John 5:41-44: I do not receive glory from people. But I know that you do not have the love of God within you. I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?

What God Desires Instead of Lip-service: Full Hearted Worship, Obedience, and Justice

• Deuteronomy 10:12-13: And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments and statutes of the Lord, which I am commanding you today for your good?

• Deuteronomy 6:5: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

• 1 Samuel 15:22: And Samuel said, ‘Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.’

• Psalm 51:16-17: For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

• Proverbs 21:3: To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.

• Isaiah 66:2: All these things my hand has made, and so all these things came to be, declares the Lord. But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word.

• Matthew 22:37-38: And he said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment.’
