12: God’s Plan for sexuality

God’s Plan for sexuality

A. God’s Word on sexuality

1. Creation of Male and Female

·      Genesis 1: 27: “So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”

·      Genesis 2: 18: “Then the Lord God said, ‘It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.’”

·      Genesis 2: 21-24: “So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, ‘This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.’ Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”

2. God’s Intent for Complementary Roles

·      1 Corinthians 11: 7-9: “For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God, but woman is the glory of man. For man was not made from woman, but woman from man. Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.”

·      1 Timothy 2: 13: “For Adam was formed first, then Eve.”

B. The Purpose of Sexuality

1. Procreation and Unity

·      Genesis 1: 28: “And God blessed them. And God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it.’”

·      Genesis 2: 24: “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”

2. The Marriage Relationship as a Union of Two

·      Matthew 19: 4-6: “He answered, ‘Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh”? So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.’”

·      Mark 10: 6-9: “But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”

C. Sexual Purity and Holiness

1. Fleeing Sexual Immorality

·      1 Corinthians 6: 18-20: “Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”

·      1 Thessalonians 4: 3-5: “For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God.”

·      Hebrews 13: 4: “Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled; for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.”

2. Avoiding Adultery

·      Matthew 5: 27-28: “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

·      Proverbs 6: 32: “He who commits adultery lacks sense; he who does it destroys himself.”

3. Homosexuality

·      Leviticus 18: 22: “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.”

·      Leviticus 20: 13: “If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.”

·      Romans 1: 26-27: “For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.”

·      1 Corinthians 6: 9-10: “Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.”

·      1 Timothy 1: 9-10: “Understanding this, that the law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who strike their fathers and mothers, for murderers, the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine.”

D. The Sanctity of Marriage

1. Marriage as a Covenant

·      Malachi 2: 14: “But you say, ‘Why does he not?’ Because the Lord was witness between you and the wife of your youth, to whom you have been faithless, though she is your companion and your wife by covenant.”

·      Ephesians 5: 31-33: “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.”

2. Marriage Reflects Christ’s Relationship with the Church

·      Ephesians 5: 25-27: “Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.”

·      Revelation 19: 7-9: “Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure—for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints.”

E. Singleness and Celibacy

1. Value of Celibacy for the Kingdom

·      Matthew 19: 10-12: “The disciples said to him, ‘If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry.’ But he said to them, ‘Not everyone can receive this saying, but only those to whom it is given. For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let the one who is able to receive this receive it.’”

·      1 Corinthians 7: 7-8: “I wish that all were as I myself am. But each has his own gift from God, one of one kind and one of another. To the unmarried and the widows I say that it is good for them to remain single, as I am.”

F. Sexuality and the New Creation

1. Christians’ Bodies as Temples

·      1 Corinthians 6: 19-20: “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”

·      Romans 12: 1: “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”

2. The Body as a Temple of the Holy Spirit

·      Romans 6: 12-13: “Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.”

·      1 Corinthians 6: 15-16: “Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, ‘The two will become one flesh.’”

·      1 Corinthians 6: 19-20: “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”

3. Living in Holiness and Purity

·      2 Corinthians 5: 17: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

·      Romans 12: 1: “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”

·      Colossians 3: 5-10: “Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming. In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.”

4. Transformation of the Heart

·      Ephesians 4: 22-24: “To put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.”

·      Galatians 5: 24: “And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”

·      1 John 3: 2-3: “Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.”

5. Living in the Spirit

·      Galatians 5: 16-17: “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.”

·      Romans 8: 13: “For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.”

6. Future Hope and Purity

·      Revelation 21: 27: “But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.”

·      Revelation 22: 14: “Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates.”
