15: Creation and Intelligent Design

Creation and Intelligent Design

1. God as the Creator of the Universe

·      Genesis 1: 1: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”

·      Genesis 1: 31: “And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.”

·      Psalm 33: 6: “By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host.”

·      Psalm 139: 13-14: “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

·      Colossians 1: 16-17:”For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”

·      John 1: 3: “All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made.”

·      Isaiah 45: 18: “For thus says the Lord, who created the heavens (he is God!), who formed the earth and made it (he established it; he did not create it empty, he formed it to be inhabited!): ‘I am the Lord, and there is no other.’”

2. Intelligent Design: Purposeful Design in Creation

·      Romans 1: 20: “For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.”

·      Proverbs 8: 22-31: “The Lord possessed me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of old. Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth… when he established the heavens, I was there, when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, when he made firm the skies above…”

·      Psalm 19: 1-4: “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.”

·      Isaiah 40: 26: “Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name, by the greatness of his might, and because he is strong in power, not one is missing.”

·      Psalm 104: 24: “O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom have you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.”

3. Irreducible Complexity: Creation as Intricate and Interdependent

·      Psalm 139: 15-16: “My frame was not hidden from you when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.”

·      Matthew 6: 28-30: “And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?”

·      Genesis 2: 7: “Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.”

·      Romans 11: 33: “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!”

·      Hebrews 3: 4: “For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.”
